Dearest gentle reader,

It has come to this author’s attention that since the dazzling conclusion of this season of Bridgerton, society has been in a most delicious disarray. Fans everywhere find themselves undone by smoldering glances across crowded ballrooms, scandalous whispers carried on the breeze, and romances that burn far brighter than any candelabra in Mayfair.

Alas, the conclusion of a season leaves many a heart forlorn. What is one to do when there are no more promenades to attend, no more letters to dissect, no more orchestral renditions of modern airs to set one’s pulse racing?

Should you find yourself yearning for the recently announced fifth season of breathless anticipation and stolen moments, consider this your invitation. The following selections promise ballrooms, banter, and perhaps even a scandal or two. Though none, of course, so artfully as those chronicled by this author.

The benchmark for all great romance stories. Pride and Prejudice is a witty and timeless romance that explores love and class. The story follows Elizabeth Bennet, an intelligent and independent young woman, and the reserved and wealthy Mr Darcy. Filled with sharp dialogue, memorable characters, and insight into social life in Regency-era England, this novel remains a beloved classic. This character-driven story that incorporates humour, emotional insight and clever dialogue, and is a perfect follow-up to cure post-Bridgerton blues.

A cosy fantasy read set against the backdrop of regency era England. The story follows Thedora, who is missing half of her soul due to a curse. Whilst trying to navigate the expectations of society without causing scandal, she teams up with Lord Sorcier, Elias Wilder to endeavour to break her curse. While Dora’s character is unapologetically direct, Elias is cold and impatient, the combination of which makes for a humorous dynamic. This book contains the unique mix of the high society drama of Bridgerton with typical elements of a fantasy novel to create a fun, lighthearted reading experience.

Carrying on the fantasy theme, The Gods Time Forgot incorporates Irish mythology against the backdrop of high society New York in the 1870s. After waking up in a cave with no memory of her life before, Rua is mistaken for missing heiress Emma Harrington. Hoping to find answers about who she is, Rua keeps up the charade. However, reality starts to come back in flashes after she meets the Lord of Donore, a newcomer to Manhattan’s elite circles. This is a twisted tale of deception, romance and mystery that is underpinned by the tragic folklore of the Morrigan sisters and warrior Cú Chulainn. In her debut novel, Gonzalez captures the glitz and drama of the upper class whilst weaving in narratives of the expectations placed on women in society.

The Gods Time Forgot is a historical romance with fantasy elements about an Irish goddess with amnesia masquerading as a debutante in Gilded Age NY.

A chaotic and humorous take on Victorian era romance. Set in an alternate Victorian reality,The Wisteria Society of Lady Scoundrels follows the fiercely independent pirate Cecilia Bassingwaite as she navigates societal expectations and unexpected romance after she encounters the charming yet suspicious assassin Ned Lightbourne. Holton’s playful writing style and imaginative world make for a read that feels fresh and unpredictable. The mix of charming absurdity, witty adventure and eccentric characters make it the perfect lighthearted-read cure for the broken hearts left by the events of season four of Bridgerton.

For those that loved the historical setting but want more of a thriller than your typical romance. Inspired by the real life story of Sarah Forbes Bonetta, The Queen’s Spade follows Sally, a kidnapped African princess raised in Victorian England who plots revenge against those who exploited her. In order to execute her plan to dismantle the monarchy, Sally partners with unsuspecting allies as she manoeuvres through Victorian High Society. Blending themes of freedom, racism and class, this book is fast paced and thought provoking, perfect for readers who enjoy complex moral stories and bold female characters.
