Words: Mio Farrenden
You heard that right, there is going to be a Super Mario Movie! The film is scheduled to release next year with Miyamoto himself working on the project.
According to Nintendo, the production is “moving ahead smoothly”. This, of course, is thanks in part to the man, the myth, and the mario creator, Shigeru Miyamoto. It is also in part thanks to Chris Meledandri, founder of Illumination studios. If that doesn’t mean much to you then maybe this will: Minions. Illumination is the studio that brought you Despicable Me (2010), the studio might have a bad name because of all the unnecessary Minion merchandise and social media frenzy but the animation itself wasn’t so bad! I personally think that this could be great news for Mario fans out there.
Aside from the name, animating studio, and potential release date, there isn’t really much else confirmed. However, according to the description in the IMDb page for the film, we’re looking at a very well-known, safe plotline. The description reads: “A plumber named Mario travels through an underground labyrinth with his brother, Luigi, trying to save a captured princess”. There is nothing confirming this from Nintendo or Illumination but the plot does ring a bell, and we’re not mad about it!
Another saving grace to come out of the news is the inference that can be made from the animation studio. If there’s something that Illumination hasn’t done, it’s live-action. That means that we can put the horrors of the 1993 Super Mario Bros. film behind us, and banish any worries of another Sonic the Hedgehog (2020) fiasco. We have also seen how different Illumination can actually make their animations. Despicable Me certainly looks nothing like The Grinch (2018), so hopefully we’ll see Mario and his friends with familiar faces!
We have no news of when the next update will be coming so you’ll just have to keep checking back here to learn more.
