International Women’s Day is everyday right?
Well, today in particular we shine an extra bright spotlight on creative women who continue to pave the way for like-minded sisters.
What a year it has been for women in music. The girls dominated the Grammy-winners scene, brought BACK Oscar-worthy music videos, and showed the world what it means to perform. Countless looks have been served, and revolutionary new art has entered our mainstream space, all thanks to pioneering women in music who deserve to have their art seen.
Today we reflect on the women of 2024: the year that brought us country Beyoncé and made the colour green fun again. If you stay until the end, there’s a peek into what unique projects could happen between the girls next…
Three Feminomenons of 2024
Chappell Roan has been capturing the girls, the gays and the dad’s hearts with Pink Pony Club’s rise to popularity five years after its initial release. Most recently we saw the Missouri/Midwestern-born songwriter perform this with Elton John at his 33rd Annual AIDS Foundation Academy Awards Party and get emotional at The BRITs, talking about the need for support for artists while they evolve and make ‘bad art’ (basically, just the artist’s journey).
However, what you may know more about is her internet-breaking SNL performance of the song, getting the crowd to sing their hearts out too with the theatrics, makeup and attire all a homage to being proudly and outwardly gay and left-of-the-commercial-dial.
Florida rapper/songwriter Doechii has stepped into the spotlight with a point to prove; black women are powerful. Her Tiny Desk performance, made up of all black female musicians, blends rap, soul and jazz, all perfectly measured out creating sound that moves your body.
Always accompanied by her two backing vocalists – her mirror images – her crafted performances throw back to 90s TV sitcoms, celebrated in the video for Denial Is A River. She carefully chooses clothing and colour schemes that complement her current record, Alligator Bites Never Heal, performing and accepting awards in a corporate-core attire.
Three times Grammy and five times BRIT award winner, after over a decade and a half, our Essex girl, Charli XCX, is finally getting her flowers. Embarking on multiple collaborative and solo tours in 2024, she inspired the world to romanticise chaos with the release of her sixth studio album brat. Her most recent appearance at the BRITs sparked ‘outrage’ among fearful onlookers (still, really?) when she donned a sheer dress to accept her five awards onstage. This has only empowered many women to defend and own their own choices and bodies.
3 Future Feminomenons of 2025
Stepping into 2025, Olivia Dean kicked off her year singing It Isn’t Perfect, But It Might Be on the soundtrack to the beloved finale of the Bridget Jones film series. Her vocals floated their way through the film and gave audiences a beautiful twist of hope when they may have had a tear in their eye.
Olivia’s chic and elegant fashion blends seamlessly with her aura and music both on and off stage. Whilst recently conquering Australia’s Laneway Festival, and currently Asia’s music scene, the north-west Londoner is one to stick around for and enjoy.
JADE. Where to start… Flying into her solo career with the release of Angel Of My Dreams, the Little Mix-ers jaw-dropping BRITs performance has secured her the title IT girl of 2025. With her mind set on the visuals she needed, the plethora of costume changes, easter eggs, and stunning vocal riffs left spectators with their jaws agape. A teaser you may have seen plastered on a dancer’s rear, FUFN (‘Fuck You For Now’), was the first taste of her debut album reveal coming later this year…
There is no debate to be had that Lady Gaga has always been a feminomenon, but will 2025 be the year we see her one-of-a-kind performances, vocals, and unbeatable fashion pieces revive? The release of Abracadabra last month placed Gaga back into our lives, all helped by the accompanying music video which has provided her song and fans its own world to live in.
From stages around the world to chart-topping sensations, these women – and many more – have left an unfading mark on the world of entertainment and its followers, breaking boundaries and redefining the meaning of success. Whilst we have given just a few the spotlight today, the list of trailblazers is endless…
