The air crackled with anticipation at London’s Electric Brixton on April 7th as Polish artist Katarzyna Nosowska took the stage. Nosowska, known for her powerhouse vocals, introspective lyrics, and iconic status as the band HEY’s lead singer, promised an unforgettable night. Armed with her latest album, DEGRENGOLADA, Nosowska delivered a captivating performance that explored the depths of human experience through her unique blend of poetry, vulnerability, and musical intensity.

The concert kicked off with the electrifying energy of ‘Predatorprzywry’, featuring her son, Miki, on guest vocals. This high-octane start set the tone for an evening that masterfully balanced the new and the familiar. The crowd, a passionate mix of Polish ex-pats and Anglophiles drawn to Nosowska’s undeniable talent roared with approval as she delved into beloved songs. Each was a testament to Nosowska’s enduring artistry and ability to connect with fans profoundly and emotionally.

The heart of the performance, however, lay in DEGRENGOLADA. While the album’s overall concept remains somewhat enigmatic, Nosowska is known for exploring themes of relationships, self-discovery, and the complexities of life. The album is an inspiring piece that encourages us to embark on an individual journey to explore the essence of our existence. It urges us to scrutinize each layer that forms our perception of reality to discover the truth and uniqueness within us. The message is simple yet powerful – we can achieve greatness if we refuse to be led by others and instead live by our own values and beliefs. It’s time to wake up to the truth. This is what Nosowska had to say about her new creation. Tracks like ‘Przytomna’, ‘Runo’, and ‘Piękna degrengolada’ showcased this with raw and poetic lyrics.

One particularly poignant moment was ‘Mówiła mi matka’, a song exploring the complexities of parent-child relationships. Featuring guest vocals by Miki, the track delves into the weight of expectations, anxieties, and pursuing a path that might deviate from tradition. Nosowska’s lyrics often paint vivid pictures, drawing from everyday observations yet transforming them into universal reflections. Her songs aren’t just stories but invitations to introspection, prompting the audience to consider their experiences and emotions.

The performance also featured a powerful rendition of ‘Rzekomo’, a song that explores themes of deception and betrayal. Its stark honesty resonated with the audience, while lighter moments, like her cover of Maanam’s classic ‘To tylko tango’, showcased Nosowska’s versatility and deep appreciation for Polish music history. Maanam, led by the iconic Kora, were pioneers of the Polish rock scene in the 1980s. Nosowska’s choice was more than just a tribute; it was an acknowledgement of Maanam’s influential role in shaping the landscape of Polish music.

Of course, the concert wasn’t solely focused on new material. Nosowska expertly weaved in fan favourites from her solo career, ensuring there was something for everyone. The venue erupted when the opening notes of ‘Jeśli wiesz co chcę powiedzieć’ and ‘Ja pas!’ filled the air. The crowd sang along in unison, their voices blending with Nosowska’s in a powerful display of devotion. Other beloved tracks followed each one a cherished memory for longtime fans.

Nosowska’s band, comprised of Michał FOX Król, Michał MALINA Maliński, Michał BUNIO Skrok, and Miki Krajewski, were an undeniable force throughout the evening. Their tight musicianship and intuitive understanding of Nosowska’s music provided the perfect canvas for her soaring vocals, each member adding their distinct flavour to the tapestry.

As the final notes of ‘Zimny’ (featuring Miki on vocals) faded away, the crowd erupted in a thunderous applause that was more than just appreciation for a single show. It was an acknowledgement of Nosowska’s continued evolution as an artist, her fearless exploration of the human experience, and the enduring power of her music to connect with a diverse audience.

Katarzyna Nosowska’s concert at Electric Brixton was a masterclass in musical storytelling and emotional connection. DEGRENGOLADA might hold some secrets close to its heart, but Nosowska’s ability to translate them into a shared experience for her audience is undeniable. Whether a longtime fan or a newcomer, this performance left a lasting mark, echoing long after the stage lights dimmed.
